‘Impermanence Captured‘
‘Impermanence Captured’ explores the relationship between physical presence, memory, and the traces we leave behind. Jessica Gaffney is interested in how ordinary moments of contact can become lasting evidence of our interactions with people, objects, and places.
Working with unfinished copper, Gaffney allow the material to change through touch, oxidation, light, and exposure. Rather than controlling the surface completely, embracing its ability to transform over time. Shaped into the familiar form of a pillow, the work brings together ideas of comfort, rest, intimacy, and physical presence with the strength and permanence associated with copper.
Placed within the transitional environment of Fish Lane, the work invites viewers to pause, approach, and interact with it. Each touch becomes part of the work’s evolving surface and history. Through this process, Gaffney position the audience as active participants, questioning ideas of permanence and impermanence, while suggesting that connection, change, and shared experience can become forms of lasting memory.
